This week belongs to Corbin Fisher. He did two very cool things. First, he released a video with Cade, Gabe and Logan. And, second, perhaps better than the first, he dumped DRM.

DRM, or Digital Rights Management is a silly nonsense technology that attempts to protect and limit media from piracy and unapproved use. It is idealistic rubbish that ultimately fails miserably at protecting anything. It just doesn’t live up to it’s promise. At least, the first. It is however, quite good at being limiting, and even better at being annoying.

So kids, the lesson of the day is, if DRM were a bodyguard, and you were Whitney Houston, you wouldn’t want it protecting you, because, that bodyguard, if it were DRM, would be Richard Simmons.

And… now you see my point, good. Now, let’s move on to bigger and thicker things. Starting with Gabe’s manhood.

More on the stench called DRM

Porn companies have flocked to DRM in lemming-like droves. Why? Because of the lure of the idealistic potential of keeping their content from being pirated. DRM will keep their content off P2P networks and other outlets that pirates use. But, guess what? It didn’t and doesn’t work. Let me say it again, as long as your eyeballs, ears and cock can enjoy a video that you can see and hear, so can a screen capturing utility or video camera.

So, what’s a girl, or, sorry, a porn company to do? Nothing. Save your money, skip the complexity of DRM and focus on giving your horned consumers better content more often. Yes, you’ll lose a portion of your profit to piracy, but that’s an inevitable aspect of selling media. It will be pirated, and DRM won’t change that.

The Party Analogy

Imagine a crowd of people at your party. Someone in the crowd is handing out photos of you sitting on the toilet in a really ugly position. Do you a) put handcuffs on everyone? or b) bag the jerk. Well, if you’re a nerd, you put handcuffs on everyone. Which we agree, is stupid. The sensible thing to do is find the jerk and sit him on a toilet, haunch him over in a worse position, snap the shot and upload it to his MySpace profile.

What would work

Much like our party analogy, the working alternative to DRM is simple — watermarks. Well, honestly, it’s not technically simple, but conceptually, it makes much more sense. Watermarking, or steganography involves digitally hiding information in data, such as a video. Each video will have identifying marks and data that are unique. If pirated, the video’s leaky source can be identified and dealt with as needed. This is obviously far more effective and efficient. And, most importantly, frees us from the chains of DRM and allows us enjoy our Corbin Fisher studs, whenever and on whatever we want. Like, for example, the iPhone.
